Berta Café

Berta Café – A Café Design Inspired by an Iconic Israeli Song

Berta Café was inspired by the beloved Israeli song "Coffee at Berta's", written by Ehud Manor about his close friend, actor and director Tzadi Tzarfati. The café itself was ultimately named after the song, making the story an integral part of its identity.

According to the song's story, Tzadi Tzarfati would often meet with a fortune teller at his neighborhood café whenever he experienced uncertainty or self-doubt in his career. She would reassure him with the words: "After a few great troubles, you will suddenly feel wonderful. Great happiness awaits you. A word from Berta is a promise." These lyrics became one of the most memorable lines of the song, which was famously performed in the 1970s by the Israeli group The Pure Souls.

The interior design was developed around this narrative and the emotions behind it. The goal was to create a warm, nostalgic, and inviting environment that connects visitors with the atmosphere of a different era while providing a contemporary hospitality experience.

As part of the design concept, posters and graphic elements inspired by The Pure Souls were incorporated throughout the café, alongside vintage oriental influences and details reminiscent of classic Israeli cafés. Materials, metalwork, and decorative features were carefully selected to reinforce the nostalgic character of the space.

One of the defining design elements is the use of decorative cement tiles. The patterns and symbols embedded within the tiles evoke mysterious and almost mystical imagery, creating a conceptual connection to the fortune teller at the center of the story. These tiles were integrated into both the flooring and the bar façade through a composition that appears random at first glance but was in fact carefully planned and designed.

The arrangement of the tiles symbolizes the uncertainty, emotional turbulence, and confusion experienced by the song's protagonist, while also reflecting the optimism and reassurance represented by Berta herself. In this way, the story becomes part of the physical space, expressed through materials, colors, and architectural details.

Berta Café demonstrates how interior design can transform a story, a memory, and a cultural icon into a unique hospitality experience, creating a place that offers far more than coffee—it offers a narrative and an atmosphere that guests can truly connect with.
